Getting ready to XS with Quilts Hawaii

Cutting the Fabric
Cut the fabric about 2 to 3 inches larger than the size of the design area or large enough to conform with your intended style of finishing. Allow for seam or turning allowance.

Center Design
Center by folding your fabric into quarters. Mark the centerpoint. This point corresponds with the point where the vertical and horizontal arrows intersect on the graph. If one arrow follows a line and the other a square a slight adjustment can be easily made to the nearest full square on the fabric. Each square on the chart indicates a full cross-stitch on your fabric. Stitching will begin from the centerpoint.

Reading the Graph
Reading can be made easier by one or more of the following techniques:

  1. Baste corresponding lines ten stitches apart to match the darkest graph lines on the chart. These basting lines can be removed as you stitch.
  2. Use color pencils to shade areas of the same color throughout the chart.
  3. Use a pencil to mark off stitches, or lines of stitches, as you complete them.
