Pre wash, iron, cut and
fold appliqué back-
ground fabric, right
sides up, as shown.
1 Fold A up to B.
2, Fold C over to D.
3. Fold E up to F.
4. Iron in folds on both
fabrics. |
Place
the pattern on
the fabric, as shown.
Pin through all the
layers OR trace around the pattern with a
pencil, then pin. Cut
out design. |
If making a multi-
color design: follow the
pattern and cut each
color separately. Add
enough fabric to allow
for the overlapping
elements e.g. flower
over stem; basket over
stem. |

Open
folded, cut
appliqué/background
fabrics, right sides up.
Ease appliqué folds to
match the backgrounds
folds and your design is
automatically centered. |
Pin
design to the background, without stretching fabric.
Keep folds lined up as possible. Baste 1/4" inside
the edge of
the appliqué. Keep fabrics
smooth, and wrinkle free.
Remove pins. |

With
these first steps, it is very important to be as
precise as possible as they are the foundation of
your finished work. Cutting without letting the
layers slip, smoothing the design gently from the
center outward so it is flat against the back ground
before pinning and basting, ensures problem free
applique and quilting later on.
