IS THERE REALLY AN ELIZABETH ROOT? Top

Yes, there most certainly is. I was born and raised in Hawaii, schooled in Arizona and Massachusetts. I have been fortunate to have been able to have traveled a good bit of the world, having wonderful adventures, including living in Australia for 7+ years in the 70's.

In 1978, I returned to Hawaii and in 1980 started designing counted cross stitch and publishing my first little chart packs. Events led to the full color magazine, Hawaiian Designin' Quarterly, which led me to designing Hawaiian quilts. I published my first book of Hawaiian Quilt patterns in 1984. In 1987, several of my designs were published by Dover Books which gave me entry into the quilting world as a bona fide designer.

In the late '80's I started having my designs hand quilted by a group, started to help women in the Philippines contribute financially to their families by learning to do beautiful hand appliqué and quilting. Many were single mothers. For 15 years they have done spectacular appliqué and quilting for me.

In 1990, I opened Elizabeth's Fancy in Kailua, Oahu. It was a delightful store which immediately became a destination stop for quilters from around the world. During that time I produced about 20 product lines, manufactured in many overseas countries and Hawaii. Many of the items were wholesaled throughout Hawaii to finer shops. In addition to the Hawaiian quilt and counted cross stitch books, quilts and kits there was the Elizabeth Fancy private label coffee, tea, preserves and sauces; jewelry, stationery, clothing and accessories, china, bookmarks, ornaments and bath lines. It was exhilarating but did not allow me time to do what I loved most - designing and publishing.

I closed the store in 1997 and the wholesale business in 1998. I took a two+ year hiatus, and lived through construction and renovation for three years. In 2001, I published Menehune Quilts...the Hawaiian way which was a new breed of Hawaiian quilting books. Several books have followed as well as this website which continues to grow.

I live on the windward side of Oahu with, currently, seven, well mannered, rescued cats to whom I am, lovingly considered, their servant.

Only on the internet. Elizabeth's Fancy, in Kailua on Oahu, closed in 1997.

PAYPAL: WHY AND HOW TO USE IT Top

PayPal in an internet service that allows those with (and recently without)
an account to send and receive money over the internet. It is a secure website. Members have a monthly record of all their money paid and received via Paypal and, of course, it can be used for purchases on Ebay. Setting up an account is free and there are no fees charged to the person making a purchase.

It is good for small businesses because it eliminates the need for bank merchant accounts which can be costly. Paypal's fees to merchants are quite reasonable.

Yes, occasionally, like any internet service, PayPal can have technical problems and down time which can be frustrating if you happen to be trying to make a purchase just at that time. Too, they are very security conscious - which is a good thing - but, again, a pain if you are trying to make a purchase and have forgotten which credit card you used to set up your account or trying to buy something from an email address where someone else in your household has set up an account using the same email address.

But considering the millions of transactions they process each day, they are remarkably efficient. In the four years I've been using Paypal I've not had a problem. So yes, I do recommend them. No, I don't own stock - but wish I did.

How to use PayPal to purchase something from this website? You will find instructions on the new Paying for Your Order page here:

CREDIT CARDS, CHECKS, MONEY ORDERS Top

Using Your Credit Card

You may use your credit card, without being having a PayPal account. PayPal is only processing the information just as any other internet order payment processing company would do.

Complete the secure order on the website and then click on the PayPal button. Go to the section that says ³I am not currently a PayPal member² and click on it. Follow the prompts and fill in your credit card information.

Be aware that if someone else at your email address has a PayPal account, you must use the credit card listed for that account even if you, personally, do not have an account.

SHIPPING CHARGES & DELIVERY TIMES Top

Shipping Charges

Shipping charges are hard to calculate as currently they have to be based on a dollar amount. So sometimes they are a couple of dollars more than what it costs to send a package, many times they are less. For US shipments this isn't as much of a problem as the Post Office now offers a flat rate box as well as a flat rate envelope.

International shipments, however, only offer a flat rate envelope and sometimes it is cheaper to send multiple items in two packages, rather than all in one. In the case where shipping charges are far more than what is estimated, I will ask for additional payment. In the case where charges are far less than what is estimated I will refund.

In many cases I absorb extra charges, excepting when items are on sale.
And remember, there is the time to invoice and pack orders, gas and waiting in the line at the Post Office - so please consider any little extra you may pay a handling charge.

Delivery Times

I try to mail items in a timely manner - usually within a week of receipt of the order, unless I'm waiting fro a check or money order. Of course, there are times when there will be short delays like when there is a large sale, holiday seasons, house guests, etc. But if you haven't gotten your order in a couple of weeks and are worried, please, always email me to check on it . You may have forgotten to send in payment, your check may have stopped off on it's way here for a suntan, or I may have simply overlooked or filed it away by mistake.

Too, if you receive our order with something missing - I fully admit to being packing impaired - let me know and I'll send it out at, of course, no charge. Same if you've gotten the wrong item, and I'll refund your return postage sent via the post office. Don't worry, I seem to have a problem with only about 2% of all orders. But if you are part of that 2% - my apologies in advance.
